故事就是从范蠡与时任楚国菊潭邑令的文种一道，为施展“扶越助楚”的报复，依然投奔弱小的越国开始

三年为奴，范蠡一面忠心侍奉越王勾践，一面苦思逃生之策，以超人心智逃过了一次次生死劫难，终于设局骗得吴王妇人之仁。主仆二人大难不死回到越国……
战后越国，千疮百孔，百废待兴。越王勾践心灰意冷。范蠡巧献“卧薪尝胆”复国方略，并与文种一起忠心辅佐勾践，颁布实施各种安邦利民的法令，着力医治创伤。修养生息，韬光养晦，励精图治。同时，面对强敌当前，以巧计周璇。贡奇珍、换粮谷、盈其宫、空其仓。送美女西施，丧气志、虚其体；假君臣之隙，断其臂膀、削其左右……
十年之后。吴国已成强弩之末，越国却日趋强盛，就在吴王举兵发齐，黄池结盟时，越国乘虚攻占吴国都城，吴王夫差带着盟主的光环回师都城。竟被三千越甲一举歼灭。面对昔日曾为阶囚的范蠡与勾践，面对曾为娇宠的西施和豪华的宫殿，吴王夫差痛恨交织，拔剑自刎
