Michael Palin出生于英格兰北部传统工业重地谢菲尔德。他从小就显示出对表演的浓厚兴趣，5岁起就开始参加舞台表演，10岁的时候他创作了一出独白戏，对着母亲朗诵莎士比亚的作品，并一个人扮演作品中的所有角色。13岁的的时候他考上了名校Shrewsbury，开始寄宿生活。16岁与家人度假的时候，他遇见了Helen Gibbins —— 他后来的妻子。大学毕业后，他与Helen结婚，两人的爱情被奉为佳话。Michael考大学的经历颇为曲折。因父亲是剑桥大学毕业的工程师，Michael首先报考了剑桥，但不幸被拒。之后他又报考了牛津大学，被Trinity学院拒之门外后，最终被Brasenose学院录取，攻读现代历史。

Michael Palin对地理有浓厚的兴趣。自20世纪80年代起，他周游世界各地，主持了多部BBC旅行节目并著书，包括：《八十天环游地球》《撒哈拉大漠之旅》《极地之旅》《喜马拉雅壮丽之旅》《Michael Palin's New Europe》《与迈克尔·佩林游巴西》《遨游四海》等。2009年，他被选为英国皇家地理协会主席，任期三年。Michael喜爱绘画艺术，除旅行节目外，他还主持过艺术和历史相关的纪录片，如《寻找失落的艺术》。每名Monty Python成员的名字都被用于小行星命名，以Michael Palin命名的小行星是9621 MichaelPalin。因性格温和，令人愉快，Michael Palin被称为“全英国最好的男人”。
